18th January – 15th March 1985 at Galerie 39 in Richmond, London
An early commerical exhibition of Madge’s work arranged by Henry Boxer when Madge wasn’t known. “In 1985 I hosted a Madge Gill mini-retrospective at my Richmond gallery. I sat there that evening surrounded by twelve and fifteen foot calicos and hundreds of drawings of various sizes – a mediumistic Aladdin’s Cave. Only two people came to my private view. They had travelled more than three hours in the rain to be there. It was Roger Cardinal and his wife Agnès.” Roger Cardinal was the first scholar to research Madge seriously devoted a chapter to her in his seminal text Outsider Art, published in 1972.
